Hohner Corona II Accordion Signed by Flaco Jimenez

March 11

Leonardo “Flaco” Jimenez, born on this day in 1939, is a Tejano conjunto accordionist and singer. Originally brought to Texas by German and Polish immigrants, the diatonic three-button accordion, such as this Hohner Corona II signed by Jimenez, is one of the main features of the Tejano conjunto. The instrumentation for a conjunto ensemble is completed by bajo sexto, electric bass and drum kit. Jimenez learned to play accordion from his father, Santiago, who is considered a pioneer of the style. In 2012, Flaco Jimenez was named a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment of the Arts.
